Milk Money

Check out this 20/20 video:

Milk Money
Interesting stuff, huh?

I wish there was more exposure to the fact that there are very few women who are actually incapable of breastfeeding their babies. If there was more national publicity about the dangers of formula feeding, maybe it wouldn't be such an accepted practice.

I'm not the type to make people feel bad about their choices. But I wish moms would stop claiming nonsense excuses for why they can't breastfeed. It's a choice, and they are choosing to ignore scientific evidence that their baby will be healthier for the rest of it's life if they breastfeed.

You want to know what I think? Breastfeeding is hard work and it requires a level of dedication that some women are just unwilling to give.

There, I said it.

  1. I agree. I also wish that people would realize that a lot of the benefits are in the milk, so even if your LO won't latch (like mine) you could pump and still provide the 'goods' to the baby

  2. I agree. I'm actually just writing a post now how breastfeeding is good for the economy too! Breastfeeding is hard, and you're right, it requires work and it's not always the easiest thing. In fact, I don't even love it like some women do. But, I'm dedicated to my child and his health and that's while I'll breastfeed.. even if it means I have lopsided boobs. :)

    I agree too.

  4. I get a little annoyed at that, too! Medically, almost EVERY woman can do it. I hate to hear people say, "I tried it, but it just didn't work for me."

  5. Joy - You have my UTMOST admiration for exclusively pumping of over a year - that takes some serious dedication, momma!

Samantha - Can't wait to read it! I didn't love it at the beginning either, it really grew on me. I think it gets better with time...might also have something to do with the fact that they aren't attached to you 24/7 anymore!

Mindy - Uh, yeah. Maybe I came on a little strong... :-)

Kristin - Ah, yes! That's EXACTLY what I'm talking about.

i actually think i'm way too lazy to go the bottle route... bfing is so handy... & to hear my snorkling, snotty little man getting some good milk in his tummy before bed did my heart good. :)

  7. I agree with paige. I couldn't imagine having to bottle feed. All the washing bottles, sterilizing, formula mixing, etc... Who wants to get up in the middle of the night and mix a bottle when you can just roll over and put the breast in their mouth and go back to sleep. lol Breastfeeding is hard work. I can't pump milk for my girls, so I can't leave my little one with anyone else for very long. I have to be a stay at home mom in order to breastfeed. Of course, we made that choice before we knew that, but... There are so many not even willing to try. I truly feel sorry for those who want to so badly but cannot. I have a friend who had a c-section and her milk never fully came in. She grieves that. I think many mothers take this issue too lightly and blame ignorance.

  9. Hi Molly, I'm Stacey from New Jersey and I stumbled on your blog through another one! I could not believe it when I read the same article! I have 2 children Madyson 4 and breastfeed her until she was 15 months and I have a little boy Bryce who will be 2 in July and I breast feed him 16 months! Personally I think people are selfish not to breastfeed, or I hate the excuse it's too hard?!?! Are you kidding? To me it's way harder and more expensive to buy bottles, formula, u have to heat it up actually completely wake up to feed your baby, and anyone can feed your baby! How easy is to just pass of your baby?! Call me selfish but I loved that I was the only one who could soothe, and feed my baby, I think we were able to bond much more than if I decided to bottle feed!! Thanks for letting me share and I really enjoyed looking through your blog!!
